The province’s Special Investigations Unit terminated its investigation into an incident last month in which a 23-year-old woman broke a fourth-floor hotel window and leapt out, after police knocked on the room door.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of June 3 at a Hampton Inn.

According to the SIU, the woman approached the door when the police knocked, and heard someone on the other side identify himself as police. Uncertain who was knocking, the woman broke the window and jumped out, landing on a ground-floor structure and fracturing bones in the process.

Meanwhile, another occupant of the room opened the door, where several plainclothes officers were waiting.

Based on preliminary enquiries, SIU director Robert Martino ruled that is was “plain and obvious that the officers did nothing to contribute to the woman’s injuries that could conceivably attract criminal sanction.

“As there was patently nothing to investigate as far as the potential criminal liability of any police officer was concerned, the file has been closed.”

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
