Thursday, July 28th 2022, 3:09 pm - A system trekking across Central Canada will bring a risk for severe storms to parts of Ontario and Quebec Thursday afternoon.

3:09 p.m. EDT - Severe thunderstorms prompted tornado warnings in southern Quebec on Thursday afternoon.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a tornado warning for the following areas in southern Quebec:

"This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches," ECCC said in its warning.

The agency added: "Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.”

The threat for severe thunderstorms will continue for parts of eastern Ontario and southern Quebec as we head through the afternoon. See the forecast below for the latest on Thursday's severe weather threat.

The break from active weather will end in Central Canada as severe weather approaches eastern Ontario and southern Quebec Thursday. The next system brings a chance for potent thunderstorms across portions of the region. Dynamics are favourable for some storms to reach severe limits, with a few possibly even developing rotation. Severe weather is creeping back into eastern Ontario and southern Quebec Thursday after a weekend of active weather. Surveyors confirmed an EF-1 tornado near Madoc, Ont. this past Sunday. The storm produced widespread damage to trees and homes in the area.

The forecast for Thursday includes scattered thunderstorms throughout Ontario, with the chance of severe storms in southern Quebec.

Parts of southern and eastern Ontario, stretching from Windsor to Ottawa, will see daily highs close to the 30-degree mark, with the humidity pushing feels-like values into the mid-30s for most.

Southern Quebec will experience the same temperatures. As heat and humidity build, feels-like temperatures will be in the 30s for some areas.

A cold front pushing into the region will scoop up the moist, unstable air and trigger a round of thunderstorms during the afternoon hours.

There will be widespread multi-cells with a chance for rotating storms or supercells.

"Rotating storms can sometimes lead to a tornado, however it is a small chance as the conditions are not favourable today," says The Weather Network Meteorologist Matthew Grinter. Although the potential for a tornado will be low, residents should exercise caution and keep an eye out for weather alerts.

The highest potential for rotating storms will be in southern Quebec. The strongest storms on Thursday could produce strong wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rainfall. By Friday the thunderstorms shift further east through eastern Quebec and into the Maritime provinces.

We’re looking forward to a gorgeous weekend across southern Ontario and Quebec. Plentiful sunshine, warm temperatures, and low humidity will make the weekend a treat for folks looking to head outdoors or open the windows at night.

On Friday, southern Ontario will see temperatures float in the mid-to-high 20s. The trend for warmer temperatures will continue through the weekend and into early next week.

Enjoy it while it lasts, though, because forecasters are watching the potential for hotter weather to build in for the first week of August, with the possibility of a heat wave.
