Batman: Fortress #2 fixed years of botched attempts from the House of Zod that were meant to tame the Earth and teach the House of El a lesson.

The following contains spoilers for Batman: Fortress #2, on sale now from DC Comics.

In the annals of DC history, General Dru-Zod has often tried to invade Earth, eventually losing patience over his conversion attempts with Superman and how short the missions often fall. No matter what, Kal-El always defends his adopted home, which has been seen across the comics, cartoons, and most notably, Zack Snyder's Man of Steel where Superman actually had to kill Zod to preserve his haven.

This arc also recently appeared in Young Justice: Phantoms, where thanks to Superboy's help, Kal was able to dump Zod and his cult back to the Phantom Zone. However, come Batman: Fortress, the DC Universe fixed these botched attempts to tame the Earth and teach the House of El a lesson, with a crew worse than the House of Zod.

In Batman: Fortress #2 (by Gary Whitta, Darick Robertson, Diego Rodriguez and Simon Bowland,) a trio of aliens descended on the planet. They are the force behind the giant ship that's decimated the flow of electricity across the globe, causing a communications blackout. This resulted in Batman trying to protect Gotham during an Arkham mass break-out, and apprehend the Joker -- someone he almost killed as he grew frustrated over not being able to decipher anything on this new enemy.

But while the aliens initially remained mysterious, their true intentions came full-circle, nodding to the fear and terror Zod inflicted. They took out many members of the Justice League, leaving Bruce trying to rehabilitate the Flash, and also, revive Cyborg. But while that heavy-hitting was done by their warship above the Indian Ocean, the trio secretly got into the Kent farmhouse.

They were looking for Superman whose been missing, hoping to cleanse the planet of his presence. They sensed he lived there since he was a kid, intimidating the family that resided there now. One member, Vigil, made it clear the Man of Steel had to pay for something Kryptonians did to her planet, cutting a very haunting figure. When they eventually left, it seems that they murdered the family, while also setting fire to the property to destroy one of Clark's most important symbols.

This compounded a brutal quest for revenge, crippling the planet, while incinerating what Kal holds dear. In that sense, it's not just physical warfare but also psychological. Its left fans wondering where Superman is, what did Krypton do to these scarred aliens, and how the villains managed to commandeer what Cyborg admitted was a Kryptonian sphere. They're more aggressive than Zod, though, and not looking to build a new colony. They're they're simply hellbent on extermination of all Kryptonians, and maybe even, the humans that oppose. Ultimately, it means if Superman does return, when he sees the damage done, there's a strong chance he, too, might not make it out due to the sins of his species.

I'm a former Chemical Engineer. It was boring so I decided to write about things I love. On the geek side of things, I write about comics, cartoons, video games, television, movies and basically, all things nerdy. I also write about music in terms of punk, indie, hardcore and emo because well, they rock! If you're bored by now, then you also don't want to hear that I write for ESPN on the PR side of things. And yes, I've written sports for them too! Not bad for someone from the Caribbean, eh? To top all this off, I've scribed short films and documentaries, conceptualizing stories and scripts from a human interest and social justice perspective. Business-wise, I make big cheddar (not really) as a copywriter and digital strategist working with some of the top brands in the Latin America region. In closing, let me remind you that the geek shall inherit the Earth. Oh, FYI, I'd love to write the Gargoyles movie for Disney. YOLO. That said, I'm on Twitter @RenaldoMatadeen. So holler.
